ARE THERE ANY RULES FOR WEARING A LEI?
I am often asked if there are any rules to wearing a Hawaiian flower lei? Is there a wrong way or right way? Some people are interested in traditional culture, others don't want to break any cultural rules, and some just don't want to look silly if they wore it wrong. Here are a few simple guidelines for you to follow.
1. There aren’t many rules with wearing a lei however it is very important to accept a lei if it is given to you.
2. When wearing a lei, gently drape it over your shoulders. This allows it to hang a little on the front and back.
3. If a ribbon is tied onto the lei you can wear it off to the right if single and off to the left if taken. You may also choose to wear the ribbon on the back (like a clasp on a necklace).
4. You don’t need a special occasion to wear a lei and it can be worn more than once.
5. Do not wear a lei you intend to give someone else as it is considered bad luck.
