One of the most significant early figures in this history was Ellery J. Chun, who ran King-Smith Clothiers on King Street in Waikiki. Chun is widely credited with being among the first to commercially produce and sell these patterned shirts on a larger scale, and in 1936 he trademarked the term "Aloha Shirt" - giving a name to something that had been taking shape organically across the islands for years.

Through the 1930s, 1940s, and into the post-World War II tourism boom, Hawaiian-made aloha shirts became internationally recognized symbols of the islands.
